Customer Services & Complaints section

Kay and I have had a discussion on the subject and I would like to start a section entitled Complaining & Praising or simply Good Customer Services. I am working on an article on how to write a good letter of complaint, and how to have good customer services as your right. If you are interested, please keep an eye peeled on this area and hopefully you can contribute too, with your own experiences and comments on which companies you feel deserve praise and villification for their customer services.

I recently had cause to return a pair of trousers which I had bought through a mail order company and sent this letter of complaint.

Dear Sir or Madam
There are more wrinkles on these trousers than there were on Mother Teresa's face, god rest her soul. The last time I saw trousers like these they were being worn by an homeless person who had spent the night sleeping in a skip.
Please will you replace these and send me a pair of trousers that have not been scrunched up into a ball and left at the back of a cupboard for 50 years!

Anyway it did the trick and they sent me a free gift voucher when they replaced the trousers..

Good for you Terence, I must say it made me laugh. Hope you had fun spending the gift voucher - it wasn't on another pair of trousers by any chance?!!!!

Well done, Terence, it does always pay to complain as companies do not want to be seen to be giving shoddy service or selling sub-standard goods as it ruins their reputation. I think, however, the fact that it made us laugh may not always do the trick with companies and sometimes it pays to take a slightly colder and less humorous tack as they may think you are just being funny and ignore you. Of course, the trousers probably spoke for themselves, so to speak....in terms of being proof of what they were like....you can't beat physical proof, like the time I sent Tesco a piece of peach stone I found in a tin of 15p Value peaches and they sent me a £20 Tesco voucher for compensation....now they have started putting warnings on their products that items containing fruit may contain fruit pips!!

and another warning that contents may include fruit!

Of course, John, there is always that danger....

I wrote this short article on Toluna back in June regarding a certain product It's not a direct complaint to the Company but more of a sideways swipe.
Love to hear your views on this.....

I've always enjoyed eating KP salted peanuts from way back but it seems this Company is now bowing to the health terrorists. When the logo on the packet reads "Original salted Peanuts" I expect to receive the original amount of salt!

Unfortunately this is no longer the case and KP has reduced the salt content in many of it's products. You may find this admirable but in my eyes it's a big mistake. KP salted peanuts now taste like unpalatable pieces of dried out wood!
I know too much salt is bad for us but I do think it should be a matter of personal choice and not up to the PC brigade to dictate my salt consumption.

All I want to say to KP is, put the salt back in or i'm off to sample Nobby's nuts!

I do agree, Terence, and my opinion is just the same as yours....I used to argue that censorship was in the TV's off switch and was nothing to do with the channel concerned, which made me a little unpopular, I have to say!!

I think salt should be added or not as the case may be but if a product is advertised as being salted then it should be and in the way it has always been. Well done for pointing that out. It is a pity that you had not complained directly to KP as I would have loved to know their "take" on the matter!!

I recently had yet another problem concerning my billing with British Gas and found myself having to send several strongly worded emails before the complaint was sorted, well so they claim.

They kept claiming that in emails my bills were apparently estimated whilst at the same time sending me bills for actual readings plus requesting my own readings which in turn would generate yet another bill all with different figures on.

As I said they claim this week that they have sorted the problem and are using both my own readings and the actual readings they took recently but we will see what they send out as they say new bills are being printed.

I also found out earlier this year that I was apparently entitled to the so called Warm Homes Discount which meant reducing my gas bill by £75 and this will be added to my account and I will be put on the list for the one for 2012 later in the summer.

British Gas also slightly amuse me as with every reply they have a separate survey asking how they did and so far over four years with them, I have as yet to write a complimentary one and they probably have a file which is increasing with my name on.
