I have seen a lot of press recently on replacing bulbs with Led bulbs. Has anyone tried them and are they any good?

They apparently last forever but are VERY expensive, I am thinking of buying some to replace the lights under my kitchen cupboards. I suppose eventually they will repay the cost since I will no longer have to buy expensive halogen bulbs.
