Customer Services (Part 4 - Sainsbury's Report)

We all know supermarkets are here to stay. The trouble is I don’t think it was ever meant to be that way. Remember Arkwright? Remember the corner shop? Remember Mace, Spar, or the little independent shop where you could walk in the door and buy anything you wanted, within reason, and you got a friendly and polite shopkeeper who passed the time of day with you and made you feel glad to be parting with some money, in fact sometimes you didn’t even notice you had spent anything? Well, that is the way I think it was always meant to be, and sadly it isn’t any longer…..we now have the supermarket. The modern method of buying everything under one roof for almost every room in your house and getting it delivered…..of course, there are good and bad things about both methods of shopping, but I won’t go into them here…but incidentally, which do YOU prefer?

I wanted to write a little piece about my new Sainsbury’s which has opened recently. We live in a small town and now have the distinction of being the ONLY Sainsbury’s in the highlands…..if distinction you could call it!! I visited, very excited about it, when my boss asked me to get some cakes…it doesn’t happen very often, but it was a quiet afternoon and I needed an excuse to check out the newly opened supermarket….fortunately I work just opposite the new site, and I was very impressed with their cakes. Fresh, delicious, and 3 for the price of 2….how could I go wrong, thought I? It was not even my money I was spending!! Even better. Then I discovered they had self-service checkouts…something no other supermarket in my locality had…what trust, and how easy they were to use. I like this.

Of course, this was only my first visit, and I was working, so I didn’t have time to have a really good look, so I went back again. With my 20 year old daughter, who was very keen to investigate the clothing department. I can understand that. What woman does not enjoy clothes shopping? So we visited, and had a good explore. Firstly, it was very spacious and welcoming. I loved the wide open prairie atmosphere….but did the aisles need to be so wide, and where was all the frozen section? Only one set of chest freezers, and one set of walled glass door freezers, and they seemed to contain mainly chips and ice cream and that was about it!! Where was the frozen vegetables section, the interesting desserts, etc., This I was let down by, because I love my freezer and like to keep it well stocked, being a working mum. I was let down also by their own brands….some of them were very poor quality, and the Shepherd’s Pie I bought for my husband was (and I quote) “no better than cat food with mush on top”!!!

I did quite like the clothing section, and the fresh foods were very well presented, but pricey. The Nectar card scheme has interesting possibilities but you have to work hard to get those rewards, 100 points gets you only 50p to spend instore, whereas there are double points at Tesco. That is a poor scheme, however you can redeem these points at a number of different places and you can also earn points at a number of different places both instore and online, so there is that versatility.

As for customer services, I was fairly impressed with these. There was a high staff presence instore and I love those uniforms! Burgundy with red trim, very bright and very un-supermarket like!! I found the staff helpful to a fault and they went out of their way in cheerful fashion to take me to the area I needed to be at, but I was also impressed by the fact that as an item was out of stock, they wrote in a book the fact and said they would advise me PERSONALLY when it came in – good service. However, that was over a week ago and I am still waiting. I put up a notice on their notice board and managed to fill the position of cleaner at our office within one week. Good coverage, then.

I liked their friendly atmosphere too. I found the self service checkouts easy to use, and I was able to put in how many bags I used at my discretion of course, so long as it was no more than 9….there was also an ATM machine outside which was easy to use and there was no queue. The fact that there is no ATM machine near that for three miles is neither here nor there….but I was sad that a café was missing from the set-up as after all the traipsing around the aisles I would have loved to sit down with a cup of tea! I did get a bargain though…a T shirt in the sale reduced to 70p for my daughter, who was pleased.

I love their selection of olives…I am a great fan of these….and their fresh cheeses were superlative. I think if I was on a higher budget than I am for food shopping I could often go there for treats, but not a full weekly shopping – I think I am committed to Tesco for that, for price and great service, and I would not change the Co-operative for my top-up shopping as they are very good with free offers and sending me email vouchers I always use.

To sum up, I would say you could live well for less with Sainsbury’s only if you did not mind how the less tasted…..but is less more? Well, I think you would find that you were struggling to make ends meet if you shopped at Sainsbury’s regularly, and I certainly could not stretch my weekly budget to a full shopping there even if I did it online which I had an offer for, to the tune of £10 off for my first £50 or more shopping. So Sainsbury’s will just keep running in the background, and I will visit only occasionally. What do you think – fan or foe?

A great review LizzieAnn! I used to do my weekly shop at Sainsburys (I had no car and it was the closest supermarket!) and generally got on well with it- until i started shopping at Morrisons and knocked £20 off my weekly shop! I find Morrisons has a better fresh fish counter also. I still go to Sainsburys for bits and the occasional lunch but i don't think i'd swap back now.

Oooh, Kay, thank you! I am afraid I am not a Morrison's fan as they were here briefly in our town when Somerfield was sold and we had the direct comparison of them to Somerfield and it fell short in so many areas it was appalling!! I thought their own brand was dreadful and although they were cheaper, I never liked the quality. Having said that I have since discovered that they have a high profile No Food Waste policy and specifically lower all their products in price in time for the evening and many pensioners are able to take advantage of this on their meagre pensions and so they are very very popular with them, and with anyone who is on a very tight budget. I object to the quality though not their prices. We do not have one locally now so I can't get to a Morrison's anyway. Saving money is such a huge priority for everyone now that it counts for alot.

My local sainsburys is an absolute joke .Its on a major business park , so we have electrical stores and the like side by side ,yes it has all the bells and whistles , even the in store cafe , but the car park is full constantly , there are no designated pick up points for people who need to get taxis . and the cash machines ..( yes I said Machines there are four of them ) consistently gobble up peoples cards when customer services are informed their stock answer is , it's nothing to do with the store you have to contact the bank.
Inside the store the quality control and stock rotation is the poorest I have ever known .

I tried to purchase some fresh pasta , being who I am I always check the dates ..good job too as it was almost three weeks past the original sell before date .When the management were made aware that not only was it out of date . it wasn't just one pack , the entire pasta section of the chillers was filled with out of date food , he said maybe the staff needed more rotation training .

The worst part of shopping in sainsburys are their unjustified price rises , you can go in there one day and buy an item for £2.99 and go back two days later to see the price has jumped to £3.45 , No explanations or apologies .

The only time it is cost effective to shop in store is if you are an employee , the staff discounts are amazing .Plus you have the added bonus of first dibs of all the sale items .

Sainsburys is a no go for me , I'm going to stick with Tesco they are better value for me .

maybe one day I will learn how to spell properly ...pass me the dikshunry pleeze :P

Tracey, wonderful fund of information that you are.....I have to say I am appalled at your pasta story...not just a few days, one day or a week but 3 WEEKS is disgusting....I would have had a lot more to say than that...you should have got your pasta free and said "pasta manyana baby" to them!! I agree about Tesco, though, much better value.

I'm afraid we're lumbered with these pre-packaged, plastic monstrosities, gone are the independents where you pick what you want, as little or as much as you want and get it packaged infront of you whilst yo sit on the chair provided. Its all about doing all your shopping in one place unfortunately and having to suffer a price rise of 50p on something like a loaf of bread versus half price offer on red salmon.Welcome to the 21st Century.

I dont mind my Sainsburys, only because it is located in town a 20 min bus ride away. Please be aware that my favourite stores are Tesco, Asda and Iceland, they all out weigh Sansburys by far! PLEASE NOTE: If you ever shop online with Sainsburys (which i have)you need to state extremely clearly what you would like substituted if they do not have it in stock! I ordered 4x packs of frozen butchers choice sausages at 25p per pack (bargain, stock up freezer, you know)end of line i thnk, anyway on delivery, 4x sainsburys butchers choice sausages were delivered at £2.00 per bag!! Mindless!! do they think oh thats ok if you shop here you must be loaded!! Fuming, i sent an e-mail to complain and have never had a reply! Now Asda and Tesco give substitutions at the same price, or as fairly close to as they can, or simply do not supply it if no longer in stock or whatever, NOT SAINSBURYS, SO BEWARE! But saying that another time they were late with delivery and the driver promtly marched back to the van after apologizing and returned with a whole £10.00 off of my next shop online! It was only about 10 mins late as well. I think that if they took a few leaves out of Tesco and Asda,s books they might come into the 21st century a bit, they seem a bit mixed up to me??

Morrisons!! Well, my local large one im always being caught out at the checkout with the wrong offer!!! Im sure they dont label things properly, hate that!! and i always seem to be questioning the price at the checkout!! Drives me Mad!! I can stand there while loading the checkout in any supermarket and know roughly (always) roughly how much i have spent, Not Morrisons?

I will be wary, Serena, about Sainsbury's online - I have not yet taken the plunge....but I love Tesco customer services, you are right, they are brilliant, but I am not sure about Asda....I never shop there for food, but love their non-food items.

John, wouldn't it be nice if we could go back to Arkwright's shop days?

I totally agree, John! We had a local shop called the Well of the seven heads....it stocked everything!! Wonderful!! I won't tell you the gory story that went with it, though!!

OK, I will tell...it is not gory about me, though. The Well of the Seven Heads store is built near the site where there were 7 clan chiefs who had their heads cut off and washed in the well....then hung on the top of the monument as a warning to other clans not to defy the authorities.....we used to swear that you could see the blood on the knife still on certain days....as the monument actually has seven heads carved in stone and a knife at the top holding all of them together....I did warn you it was gory!

The idea of the faithful local corner shop has sadly become a thing of the past. My Granma used to live down in Lowestoft, Suffolk and two doors down from her terrace house was a small local shop run by a lovely lady.

My Granma would go in every few days for her essentials like milk, bread and cakes and we often got treated to sweets there when we visited her.

Sadly she got old and became ill and it was the shop owner who got concerned at not seeing her, that resulted in her contacting the police who found her in the house and very seriously ill.

She died of Cancer a few months later but I think my parents should have been much more grateful to that shop owner for being so concerned about her.

Being very ill my self I would very much appreciate having someone who cared like that shop keeper did, near me and do not see that as interfering.

I ftried Sainsbury's twice, as the nearest store is in the next town. The first time I was quite impressed with the cleanliness, layout and prices. The 2nd time, about 6 months later, things were not as good. The store was still clean, but everything had been moved and it was not easy to find my way around and the prices had skyrocketed. I have not been back.
