SHOULD NURSES BE UNI TRAINED

From experience I say no. My pal is OLD style SRN and so is my neighbour. Both notice difference. Both say there is too much academic and little care. Big deal came when old style took their training when visiting my bro. stripped his hospital bed and remade it with their corners and demanded correct meals and tablets. Uni lot got character.

A very old friend of mine works in a local playgroup and has her midwifery qualification as well as sick children's nursing certificate and was told she would have to go for a further nursery nursing qualification to qualify her to look after pre-school age children and she has worked there for 21 years...when she said, surely not, I have all the above qualifications, they told her that she could take the other option and they cut her hours and made her a "casual" worker because of her lack of this specific qualification...sad, isn't it?!

Ros, I think it is about a person's character, too, isn't it?

I have to say its the PC nanny state gone mad ! when a qualified nurse of some standing is told her qualifications aren't good enough , it makes a mockery of nursing in general.

Most University trained nurses are more focused on the Acedemic , but , this is more to do with the qualification changes that have occurred over the last 20 years .

I know many who started in nursing homes as auxillaries who felt that they could give a better quality of care than some of the people being employed in the home as nursing staff at the time .

Did you know that a qualified nurse from India can come to the UK without even a basic grasp of the English language and get a job as a matron in a privately run nursing home .What is even more astounding is the fact that nursing qualifications are bought in India for as little as £100 .You can see how it could be an attractive proposition for them .

The real shame is that Caring about the quality of Care given isn't a mandatory qualification...

Sorry off my soapbox now !
