SCS No Customer Service

Have you heard of SCS, the Suite and Carpet people. Avoid them like the plague.
My old mum purchased a new 3 piece suite august 24th 2011. When I returned from holiday last friday, mum showed me the state of the sitting cushions on this suite. They had gone flat. I called the SCS customer services who promptly sent a upholster out to investigate and take photos. Yesterday the report was delivered and stated that there was nothing wrong with the cushions. I instantly called back to their CS dept and asked how they arrived at that conclusion, only to be told that the upholsterer had told them nothing was wrong and they take his word and that the matter was closed. Wrong.
I contacted Trading Standards who told me to go to the store were mum bought the suite with the cushions and demand to see the store manager. He did come and see me, I showed him all correspondence, then he took me to an identical suite in store and lined our cushion with one in the store and you could visably see our cushion was about 2 inches thinner. He said he would put a report in, but because the case had been closed by their upholsterer, there was nothing he could do.
Trading standards have told me to get an independent upholsterer to give a report on the cushions, send a copy registered post to SCS headquarters and tell them that we are going to take them to court for failing to keep to the terms of their contract and guarantee.
I will let you know of the outcome.

What an incredible lot of hassle over your poor mum's suite!! I think you have done the right thing, but what a lot of fuss to have to go to just to get what should be your rights, a comfy suite!!

38,000 YSP members will now steer clear of SCS.
Keep on at them George and write a letter to your local papers.

Yes, and beware or DFS! My brother went in innocently during one of their sales and chose his new 3 piece, tried to pay by cash and was told he could not purchase it because it was in the buy now pay later sale!! work that one out!! I felt sorry for him as he had his heart set on the particular leather suite, and was not aware of the rules, i personally have never heard of them mentioning this on their adverts? have you? You apparently HAVE to take out their credit!!

We bought our new 3 piece leather suite, we've never had a new suite before always secondhand. Over 2 years we have had this in the last year we had a tear on the back of the chair were your back goes, it was taken away as a manufacturers fault and sewn back together, now another manufacturers fault and its out of the policy cover, a guy came out and took lots of pics and said its a manufacturers fault and put it to the company the guardsman company said they wouldnt fix it as it wasnt a rip or tear it was a manufacturers fault so were not covered, now having to write a letter to the top person to see if they can do anything. Also when you take the couch cushions off and put back on with the velcro we have a rip due to the velcro. Why pay for extra protection on the leather suite when they turn round and say you are not covered. Its put me off leather for good, so much trouble. The guy said it would be no problem to fix but scs/guardsman won't admit that we are covered, I am sorry I bought leather I wished wed of gone for fabric. Any help on what my next step would be or anything else I can do please.

Its like SCS, thhey have tried to say that not only is there nothing wrong with my mums suite, but it is a manufacturers fault and also not covered by the guarantee. So why sell a guarantee if it does not cover you. The seller must have to state if it is covered, dont they?

I dont know if you have home/contents insurance, its always worth asking if you may be covered for accidental damage no matter what the circumstances, some company's may help, worth inquiring, our insurance covers us for everything apart from wear and tear.

That's a good idea but if you have never claimed before, how do you start? Have you ever made a claim Serena? I think there is sometimes an excess and I wouldn't know where to start...:(

Find your policy document cover and read it back to front, that's what i did when our fence fell down, but sadly like nearly all insurance providers they now no longer cover for fence damage in bad/windy weather, which i do think is disgusting as we ended up paying £600.00 for our new fence and that was doing it ourselves.
You must ring and inquire, your policy documents will contain information about excess as well if you have to pay any, although when we brought ours i asked the provider for example if i accidentally smashed my tv screen would i then just have the tv replaced at the same cost of the damaged one, and he said yes, and did not mention any excess to pay, so just ring and ask for some advice if you are not sure, ours is quite an expensive one with Legal and General and i have no experience with them so far in 3 years, so i cannot comment, although they did give us discount on this years policy for no claims, i hope this helps.
Either that or contact your local trading standards for advice, ive heard they are the best for the above problems, or contact Dom Littlewood on "The one show" website, he is brilliant for legal advice and ive seen his show many times where he has helped people resolve their problems with companies giving pain in the bum problems to descent people, they usually give in if you say you will be making the problem public, so even the threat of you contacting them can actually make them jump into helpful action !!

Thanks for your reply, Serena, very good. I would definitely take your advice on that, but I think I have never really been in a position to claim.

That is very sad about your fence, £600 is a lot of money!! :(
