I have a very old central heating system and cannot afford to turn it on never mind replace it, but I thought I would find out if I could get cover on it so I phoned Domestic & General and they asked me what the make of my boiler was. How do I find that out? I have a boiler in a cupboard with a jacket on it and the only thing I can see on it is BACKERSAFE but apparently that is not the make of it. Help!

Are you renting your property LizzieAnn if so phone up your rent office ask to speak to someone in repairs try and get them to come out take a look for you. If its bought, who built the house and go from there surely the deeds should give some clues to repairs who built what etc. goodluck.

what would be the use of cover ?because you would have to wait for a good few months to validate your claim .

I have nothing wrong with my central heating system, it is working fine and I have no claim to make.

Good idea, Spider, it is an ex-council house so I will start there, thank you! I did buy it from the council about 10 years ago.

I have just phoned my local council and their maintenance officer is going to find out and give me a ring back...thank you so much for your help. Having said that, the system is very old, and Domestic & General say they cannot take anything under cover that is more than 15 years old so I might be up the proverbial creek....we shall see!!

I have just been going through some important paperwork having a huge shredding session (which I have to do at least once every 6 months as I am not the world's most tidy person!) and discovered that the £15 I pay to HBOS for my Ultimate Rewards bank account has home emergency cover in it at no extra charge....I phoned them and hey presto! I am covered for EVERYTHING for this amount if anything goes wrong, I just phone and that is it!!

No phone call from the council yet though to tell me anything...maybe they don't know?! :(
