I think the key here is that you are asked to do an article in the style of a health and beauty magazine, the one on Botox, I mean. I have not had time to do this yet, but have had articles published in the past by various magazines and they are all looking for a certain editorial style. Even in their readers letters, which I have also had published. The key thing to getting anything accepted for publication is that you have taken note of the editorial style and aimed at that sort of readership....an article acceptable by Take A Break, Cosmopolitan would chuck in the bin!! Does any of the above make sense? If I have time, and if there are any places left, I will try to comply over the weekend, and yes, it could open some interesting doors and the payment appears to be £5-£10 for any short article, but as I have not had enough time to investigate fully, I may be wrong. Will report back on how I get on! :)

I totally agree with what Lizzie has outlined above. In my line of work I regularly write articles for newspapers, magazines and journals, and each piece of work has to have a different voice, so to speak. The Botox article yesterday is not typical of the sort of stuff I write about, but it is typical of what a serious editor would request of you when they choose a freelance writer; it's a test in itself to see how well you can adapt to being put on the spot, and a good way of testing your research skills, and whether or not you are flexible in your style of writing.

Also, any good editor (when commissioning a piece of work) will request that you familiarise yourself with their publication; in some cases, they will even send you a free copy of the magazine to study if you forward an SAE to them.

If any of you are genuinely interested in writing articles for magazines, or seeking to publish poetry or anything else, get down to your local library and flick through the latest edition of either The Writers'and Artists'Yearbook, or The Writer's Handbook; either of these publications contain a wealth of information on where (and to whom) you should submit your work, payment details, and anything else that is required of you in order to be published. There is also a lot of other useful information in these titles to help those who are just starting out as well as established writers.

Hope some of this helps!

It's part of my job, Ros. It can be a bit on the boring side at times, but some of the projects are quite interesting, and it means I can work from home for some of the time. ;-) I do like to write as a hobby as well, so I suppose it all helps!

I totally agree, Katie, it is a really interesting subject and I love to write too. I used to compile cryptic crosswords and puzzles for children too, which was really thought-provoking. My husband did the art work and I did the word-work so to speak...I miss that, now I work for a boss but would love to be freelance writing if I had the courage and a few less bills!! :(

Oh Lizzie, a totally freelance lifestyle would be wonderful!! And you are totally right about having the courage, and fewer bills - I'd take that leap anyday if I could.

I absolutely love the idea that you made your own cryptic crosswords and puzzles for your children - what a wonderful way to build their confidence, and the thought that your parents had done it together for you is so lovely. :-)))

By: LizzieAnnDate: 19 Nov 2011 3:53 PM

Oops, Katie, sorry, I didn't do them for my children (although I road-tested some of them on them!!) but I did them for a publishing house called The White House and they paid me for them, at £23 a puzzle!! We did lots of interesting seasonal ones such as Hallowe'en, Easter, Pancake Day, etc., and lots of themed ones, and I would have regular discussions with the editor and she would give me an idea of how much page space they had to fill and then we would design the dimensions accordingly. We often had three puzzles in each issue and then the magazine folded after issue 10 and we were defunct! :( sad really it was fun.

I designed and wrote a series of crosswords for our local newspaper too just after that for which I was paid the princely sum of £9 per crossword for 6 weeks, all on a local theme, and cryptic too! My favourite kind!! I also had some puzzles published in Take A Break, but that was many moons ago...they used to have a readers choice puzzle...I don't do it anymore, but keep my hand in by doing cryptic crosswords (solving them) as it keeps the brain cells active! :) and mine need all the help they can get!!
