Car mechanic from hell

12:11pm 22nd May 2007

The worst customer service I have ever had was from an incompetent indifferent very rude and surly car mechanic from a badly understaffed small local firm - which isn't usually the case...however, when my husband recently took our poor old Nissan Primera J reg car in to have a new clutch fitted which, in total cost a considerable amount of money as you can imagine, we realised that the mechanic must have somehow managed to break our car radio stereo without bothering to explain or tell us, as it worked fine before leaving it in their 'capable' hands!

In the end after 6 weeks of waiting, getting a whole load of hassle 3 letters 8 phone calls and fob offs from the manager followed by more denials and no apology, we finally took it to another garage for a repair and "second opinion".

Upon collection we were eager to know the verdict of their investigations. We were firstly asked if we listened to Radio 1. When puzzled I answered; "Never! No, Classical FM, but why?" I was told that somebody had forced the tuning knob on to Radio 1 (which we never bother with) but in doing so they'd managed to break all the other radio wave tunings at the same time and that by trying to force it, had bent the internal electric connective wires so badly the whole system would have to be replaced.

Armed with the quote for repairs and this proof there followed a swift return to the original car firm. I explained what had been discovered and the problem. The response was a sarcastic chuckle and a sniggering; "Oh well classical FM isn't even mainstream listening I've done you a favour! (?!) Adding as calmly as if he was talking about the price of a hotdog.."I'll chuck in a repair for you for free if you promise not to tell the owner". What a cowboy!
