A smile really brightens up a persons day. It doesn't take much effort and it is really rewarding. Try to smile everyday and find something pleasant to think about helps to banish the blues. Whatever the weather, whatever the mood, smiling people make the world seem a much better place. I was in fine spirits when I went to the bank early this month and the bank teller was obviously in a really bad mood. My children were with me and they passed comment to me as they also saw the tellers face. I said that all he needs to do is smile and the day will fly by before he knows it (after all, people do say that time flies when you're having fun!). I understand that banks may not be the funnest of places to work but being in the public eye, at least he should have made an effort surely. I often put the smile theory to the test myself, especially when I am playing really bad at bowls (in that case it is almost all of the time!)and I find my game gets better and I can actually do it. Today I went into the same bank and the teller was all happy and smiley even though I gave him loads of bags of small change to bank (I am a club treasurer so I did the monthly banking, groan, groan, groan) and he actally laughed. The children noticed the difference and customer satisfaction was 100%.

When you see someone without a smile - give them one of yours straight away. I
always do and amazingly it works most of the time and those it doesn't with, it really annoys them because you appear to be in such a good mood - now that is a "Win-Win" situation.

I think if you have a frown just turn it upside down and you get an instant smile!!!!!

Right...it looks like you all come from a happy planet, one that I've never heard of. There's always a time and place to be happy but to be fair everyone has their days and not all of them can be turned around with a smile. You have your good days and bad - it's life, deal with it or you might get dealt with.

true!...but are you still talking about a customer service??
Sima Najma, at 1:31am 6th Sep 2007, wrote:
Yes. Advisers, tellers, check out attendants, mechanics - you name it. They all deal with customers everyday and offer services but what I'm trying to say is that don't get disheartened if you don't get a positive vibe from them when you deal with them. Although giving a good attitude is part of delivering a good customer service, it might be hard for them to put on a front, especially if thier day has gone from bad to worse then maybe it takes more than smile to put things right. Empathise with them, we've all been there.

I think that a smile can really be an ice breaker...especially when meeting new people. A smile makes you look more approachable and makes people feel like they can come over and chat to you.

You're a bunch of fakes! A smile should be genuine and for a reason! Not because our pre-judging society says we need to smile. I'm in a polite mood, but i sure as hell ain't smiling right now!

I agree! It's hard as hell to sit and 'smile' at customers all day, it's got to work both ways! If I've just dealt with a crap customer, I'm sorry, but I'm only human and I'm not automatically gonna be able to 'fix' a smile on my mush and carry on!
I'll be polite to them, but I'm not gonna be grinning like the Cheshire bleedin' Cat!!

Well actually a smile is generally infectious, if your walking down the street and smile at everyone that you pass they usually smile back at you, and even if you dont see them smile, the fact that you smiled at them will help them towards a nicer day...try it and see!!!!

My favourite quote - I have it on the wall in the loo!
"Give a smile and you'll get a smile as on your way you pass for, as you journey, you will find that life's a looking glass"
My 19 year old daughter always smiles at 'old' people, syas it may the only one they'll get all day.
My mum always smiles, she's now 85 and still smiling. I smile all the time, drives everyone nuts! but I figure, if I'm smiling then I must be happy!
Another quote I read the other day "Nobody notices when I'm miserable so I guess I may as well be happy!"
Go for it - what have you to lose but misery wrinkles!

I have to say that I smile most of the time because all in all I am usually happy but the odd times that I am not feeling smiley I'm sure not giving out 'false' ones. If it is genuine, give it out and happy up the whole world, if i'ts not. Don't. Checkout attendants are human, not machines to be swiched to smiley mode just for us.
I do think a lot of us smile constantly because we kid ourselves that everything is coming up roses.I try to remember that the person I am about to throw a beamer at may be newly bereved or just made redundant or some other 'happiness destroying' stuff. They might even feel like punching my nose!
I think it's probably a bit patronising actually. I have an aunt whom I love dearly who has a knack of visiting me just after I have had Chemotherapy and am tired, nausous? sore and grumpy. I just want to lie in a darkened room and be horrible because that's what I need to do . She just overwhelmes me with her smiley 'everything will be OK attitude'Bless her, but I really do want to punch her lights out, pour her into a taxi and send it off to smiley land!!
