Picture it - you are looking down at your current mobile phone with a feeling of loathing. Knowing that all your friends and family are sporting the latest models you decide it is time to take the plunge. The world of mobile phones is confusing to say the least. You expect to be able to go down to your local mobile store, get a member of staff to explain to you the dieffernce between mp3 and mp4, pick your favourite, pay and be on your way. Simple! Not the last time i experienced it it wasn't. Entering the store i was greated by a smarmy, greasy 17 year old lad who treated me as if i was an idiot. Laughing at my inability to decipher what different letters meant at the end of each mobile branded name (i mean for goodness sake, if they bring out about 500 different models a month then how am i meant to know!!!) he then attempted to bully me into signing a contract. I told over and over again (maybe all that grease was filling up his ears) that i was only interested in pay as you go but he was having none of it. He even looked at me and suggested that maybe if i was too poor that a mobile phone wasn't for me!!! Of course after demanding to see the manager i was informed by the snotty kid that he was in fact the manager. Leaving the store very annoyed i immediately decided to contact the company to put in a complaint. After being on hold for over 40 mins i was eventually transferred to a bored sounding young girl - who obviously could not care less how much i was ranting and raving- to be told that the situation would be dealt with. Ha! i thought- fantastic he will get what is coming to him. Oh imagine my suprise then, when two weeks laer i walked past the same store to find him cornering another young lady with the same sneer! I do feel bad though - i just carried on walking.

This the situation I put up with everytime I upgrade my contract phone and I also get about 5 calls a week for the 3 month run up to the end of my contract telling me I can upgrade to the latest 2251 hand set which replaces the old 2255, as it now not only has mp3, mp4 video mail & 3m pix camera (it can't make telephone calls that's an optional extra!) but it also has a global domination button & if I order now I can have the newest handset to be released tomorrow called 2250 which is just the same as the 2251 but is purple and costs and extra £200! Arrrgh! Why can't I just either keep my current phone and do my bit for the planet or upgrade without any hassle and have whichever one I get free.

The answer here is shop online, compare deals and choose the one that you want. Shop assistants/managers and advisors on the phone will always be geared to selling you the phones that make them the most money or that they have a backlog of - not what is best suited to you.
Don't be rushed into anything because it sounds good at the time, what sounds good today is often superseded by something better tomorrow, particularly in the mobile phone market. As a good start try a comparison site like www.moneysupermarket.com

In April this year My hubby took me into a mobile phone shop to buy me one for our Anniversary. I knew which one I liked and could have bought it for around £50 and have pay as you go. BUT... the young nerdy lad serving us convinced us we'd get a better deal etc etc if we had it on contract! So being bombarded with all the details at a terrific pace - we signed on the dotted line. We now having to pay £25 per month but every 4 months we have to photocopy my bills and send them off to them, then we get £60 off!! That make's it about £15 per month - but I never get to use all my 'allowance'on it, I always have at least £30 over each month - yet they charged me for a text I sent from Spain recently even though I still had loads of credit! They definitely make more money out of you if you sign up to a contract.

The greatest word I have learnt is 'no!'. I use it for everything, from call centres trying to sell me something and charities knocking on my door, to customer wanting it NOW NOW NOW. People, especially the English it has to be said, find it very hard to say no. They make excuses, give reasons, even tell stories with long plot lines. However if you know what you want (I don't mean the model of mobile but the fact you want pay as you go) then just say no when they sell you something different. Don't give a reason. Don't justify yourself, just say NO!!! You may think you are being rude but you're not. They are being rude for not listening. In fact, in alot of situations, they are breaking the law selling they way they do.

I'm 57 and have no mobile phone so why do 100% of homes have mobiles? My mother certainly does not have one nor my mother-in-law. I don't need one. But I am always asked to give a mobile number on-line. Frustrating! I walk a dog and see others walking a dog with a mobile phone. What does that tell the dog? Seriously, mobile phones are over rated. Having none is stress free belive me. I relay on a main line home phon, my e-mail at mhcaldwell@btopenworld.com and as an author and film screen writer I have a website at

It drives me mad that when you go to buy a mobile 1, you cannot choose the network you want but it has to be the one that goes with the phone, & 2 caertain phones you cannot buy if you are on pay as you go or have to pay a largwe amount and when you get it on contract you get the phone free.
Its not a case of what customers want these days.

It is very frustrating how people go into supermarkets and just as they get to a checkout decide to call someone they chat through packing and paying for shopping, I find it very ignorant.

I have to agree with all of the comments made here & to add to it all I wanted to go with Virgin but for some reason my bank card was refused, time & time again so I went with stayed with Orange & had to pay extra for the phone I wanted, guess what!! my card was accepted that time & I checked with my bank & was advised it was their machines causing the problems. That was at a carphone warehouse where we were totally ignored for quite a while and walked out and it was much the same at the next one.

Hi,
Unlike everyone here, i would actualy disagree with the some/most of the statments above. Contracts and Pay As You Go are two totaly different things, for two totaly differen groups of people. If you use your phone occasionaly, it makes sence to go an PAYG. If you use it alot, then go on Contract. It's not up to the sales person to tell you what you need... you need to know this! Yes, they will try and convince you to buy something more expensive, but if you know that you will not use £5 worth of calls a month, why sign up for a £35 p/month contract?
I am a sales person in a phone shop and work in the PAYG section. When i get a customer, i always work around their needs and suggest phones which will do exactly what they want it to do. I dont know where you experienced this bad service, but not everyone is like that.
Finaly, buying online is totaly different and wouldent suggest it. A phone can look pretty in a picture but in real life it's fact. A phone is something personal, so it would be wise to view it and hold it in your hand; see how it feels; see if it's you or not!

What I hate about mobile phone shops is that they pounce on you when u walk in cos they are commisson based. I know quite a bit about phones and never go in unless i know exactly what i want (which i then tell them) and i find that baffles them a bit, but learning to say 'No im fine thanks just looking!' gets easier as you go along. A lot of my friends feel pressured when they go into one to buy but i tell them to come to me first now x

i have not had this experiance while in a phone shop but i do feel that people take power to their head and that alot of companys dont care as long as they are selling. i would report it to watch dog. i did for another company. nothing may happen at the time but if enough people have the same complaint it will soon end up being investigated. as they say things come to those who wait. hope you got your phone else where without to many problems.

I was in a carfone warehouse yesterday as my camera is not working properly, the assistants attitude was ignorant and I was angry but kept it under control, first of all he said the fone was out of warranty and then asked me for the no. which I gave him but I got it wrong somehow so he asked for my name and we finally got it right. He then said I had to take it to a store downtown & they would look at it for me so I took it downtown and the response there was terrific. The male assistant tried to take a picture with it and it failed but he did agree there was a fault with it and asked me to go to another counter where he proceed to printout a fault ticket. I asked him how he had managed to get my info. He said all he had to do was scan the fone??????? and there is a 2 year guarantee on it so it will be repaired for free. I think the first young man is in the wrong job.

Ive had a contract for atleast 3 years now, and nothing has gone right since i opened the contract. I was charged for 5 months for two contracts when i had only taken out one. I was charged double for my bill and charged alot of money for a phone that i had not used. They closed my iternet account and will not let me open it up again. So whenever i want to check my inclusive minutes or texts. I have to go through half an hour of listening to a snotty nosed kid get aggressive with me cause im wasting their time and i shoud check on the internet instead. I made a complaint and no action was take, they didnt take the matter seriously. I tried to cancel the contract but was told that i would have to pay £389 to do so.
However i opened another contract on 3G and the customer service in the store was brilliant it was easy and straight forward to set up. When you ring up the company they deal with your problem straight away. When i had taken it home, i couldnt get siganl, when i rang i was infomred to take it back into my store, were i spoke directly to the store manager, who explained the problem to me, and offered me a different phone, on the same tarif. I'll definetly be sticking with 3G from now.
