The best service I've had was a small café in Lancashire, while on holiday.

My wife spotted the fact that they had started the process of making my sandwich and were using Olivio olive oil spread. I'm allergic to olives and my wife had to ask them to forget the sandwich. Rather than do so, they got some other spread specially! Not one complaint from them and a "thank you" for pointing out a need to be careful about what they used.

More cafés could do with being clear as to what they use in their foodstuffs.

My cousin is allergic to several things eggs milk cheese nuts ect. She cannot eat out at all. She went to a friends birthday party and almost ate a truffle until my aunt realised it had trace of nuts. It must be so horrible always having to check foods.

products (inc. menu's) should be clearly labelled with allergy information!

But if you have an uncommon allergy, maybe you should ask at the counter first?

The chains can do it right though. We recently went to TableTable (Whitbread) chain pub with a guest who is coeliac (gluten intolerant). The staff wre extremely helpful in checking ingredients and gladly changed the order if they found items were unsuitable. There was also information about other allergens (nuts for example) on the menu. In general though I agree that an independent cafe is likely to be more flexible and accommodating and may also be better value (though again our TableTable meal was excellent value for money).
