What is covered on a car warranty

I was with my cousin some 10 months ago when she took her car to the Renault dealers were she bought it. She took the car back because of a fault (It was firing on only 2-3 cylinders) i knew what it was due to all my driving and mechanical experiances. The service receptionist said it would cost £70 to be put on the diagnostic machine to find out what it was and then the cost to repair. I intervened and said that the car had been purchassed only 3 weeks earlier, what was wrong and that it was a well known fault with this type of renault. It was an electrical sensor which keeps blowing and causes a few problems, which renault are fully aware of, but they insist on charging the customer for a manufacturers fault. If it was not for what i know about cars my cousin would be well out of pocket as she has returned the car a further 2 times because of the same thing. This is customer service of the lowest order.

have any of you YSP members had similar or worse experiance with car dealers.

To the YSP member who says rubbish, IT IS NOT. I before retiring as a motor mechanic last year can confirm that the Renault Megane Scenic does have an electrical fault as described by George Davison, and i can confirm that at a specific garage belonging to Renault on the coastroad in Newcastle does charge to replace the part and to put it on the diagnostic machine to confirm the fault, even though they know what it is.

The number crunchers decide if it is worth recalling or leaving it as it is in cases like this, which is very bad customer service.

I used to have a renault sceneic and for the reasons mentioned above i got rid of it, although it was not until recntly through talking to a garage were i get my new car serviced, that i was told the same thing by the mechanic there, that there is known faults with electrics on that model renault and they are making a killing with unsuspecting owners.

car manufactures are bad like that, for example BMW have been on watch dog because of the tires on a certain model which i cant remember (sorry)and what would happen is the drivers would go ova a few pot holes and the tires would just give in, now BMW was aware of this problem and did nothing to solve it, and if you took your car back in they would just charge you for a new set of tires until next time. I think that car manufactures need to be aware of faults in their vehicles and when one is spotted it should be taken out of production or owners should have a full refund if requested or even just free repairs. At the end of the day if you buy a car it should last longer then the warranty, but in these times their to worried bout making money and not what the customers want or need as a reliable car, its terrible. I always buy my cars second hand now at least that way i pay bout £1000 at most and get several years out of it before i buy another one its a lot cheaper in the long run trust me. And you get to have a different car so i don't get bored.

Thanks for that Lou. The other thing with BMWs is the tyres cost a lot more than the cost of fixing the Renault.

To me certain companies are prepared to take the risk of saying nothing for the sake of profit and it reminds me of a car company in the usa, who kept quiet about its car, that when turning right with indicators on caused an electricl fault, but the danger was, should another car run into the back of them whilst doing the turn with indicator on, the car burst into flames. Eventually they were taken to court and lost billions in damages. No wonder they try to hush things up.
